Probably the first TV show I remember watching growing up was the Andy Griffith show. In the decades to follow, I would watch it in reruns, seeing every episode several times. It is a testament to the show that it has been in continuous reruns for about 44 years.
I loved the zany characters on the show, Barney, Opie, Otis, Gomer and Floyd. (Okay, I was never a fan of Aunt Bee or Andy's last and worst girlfriend, school teacher Helen Crump. ) But the character I liked the best was the straight man and leader of the gang, Andy Griffith. He was the ultimate cool head, common sense leader. I loved it when all the city slickers came into Mayberry thinking Andy was some dumb hick and ended up being outsmarted by the Sheriff.
If you don't have time to watch the entire 9:20 minute clip, go to about 8:15 and watch the rest. Hilarious scene.

Andy's best girlfriend, the lusty "Peggy," was Ryan O'Neal's besotted wife (deceased, so no libel), and Tatum's mom, Joanna Moore.
I was very fond of Ellie Walker too. Crump was definitely the worst.
Whenever I go to Crawfordsville, I pretend it is Mayberry. In the 90's it cost a nickel to park and a quarter if you got a ticket.
A couple of times one of my more hilarious friends and I would drive around the town and pick out where the characters lived.
I'm with Paul, I loved it when the city slickers got outsmarted too!
HFFT, Crawfordsville is WAAAYY bigger than Mayberry. A more comparable town would be the downtown area Whitestown, before all the subdivisions were built which increased its population.
Was my favorite show as a little kid! RIP Andy! Mayberry and Sheriff Taylor will live on for a long time in reruns!
I was able to get the 1st season on DVD from the library and in the first episode Andy was more country in the first episode. He slowly evolved as the relaxed kicked back sheriff who liked to mess with Barney. By the way Barney was a cousin of Andy and that how he got the job.
Yep, nepotism, Guy. That's how the incompetent Barney got his job.
