Tale of the Tape: 1976 Yankees v. 2009 Yankees

Having followed major league baseball for a number of years, I have noticed a big change in the size of Major League baseball players. I compared the roster of the 1976 Yankees who lost the World Series to my beloved Cincinnati Reds and the roster of the 2009 Yankees who are now one win away from capturing this year's World Series. Here's what I found:

Pitchers
1976 Yankee Pitchers: Averaged 6 feet, 1 inches tall, weighed 192.1 pounds
2009 Yankee Pitchers: Average over 6 feet, 2.5 inches tall, 221.7 pounds
Difference: 2009 Yankee Pitchers are on average 1 1/2 inches taller and nearly 29.6 pounds heavier than their 1976 counterparts.

Catchers
1976 Yankee Catchers: Just over 6 feet, 1/2 inches tall, weighed 194 pounds
2009 Yankee Catchers: 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weigh 225 pounds
Difference: 2009 Yankee Catchers are on average 1 1/2 inches taller and weighed 31 more pounds than in 1976.

Infielders
1976 Yankee Infielders: Just over 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighed nearly 180 pounds
2009 Yankee Infielders: Nearly 6 feet 1 1/2 inches tall, weigh 208 pounds
Difference: 2009 Yankee Infielders are 2 1/2 inches taller, and 28 pounds heavier than infielders for the 1976 Yankees.

Outfielders
1976 Yankee Outfielders: Just over 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighed nearly 181 pounds
2009 Yankee Outfielders: A little over 6 feet tall, weigh 207.5 pounds
Difference: 2009 Yankee Outfielders are over an inch taller and weigh 26.5 more pounds than outfielders on the 1976 club.

Overall
1976 Yankees: Averaged just under 6 feet tall, weighed 185.5 pounds.
2009 Yankees: Average about 6 feet, 1 3/4 inches tall, weigh 215.8 pounds
Difference: 2009 Yankee players are nearly two inches taller and weigh 30.3 more pounds than the 1976 Yankees.
