The success of the three early voting centers in Marion County is proof that it is time to scrap the precinct voting system that dates back to the horse and buggy in favor of a system that would allow anyone on Election Day to cast a ballot at any voting center in Marion County. This would allow for a great reduction in the labor used to put on an election and provide much greater convenience for the voter. I should add that it also provides a lot more security for the vote. Right now there is going to be a number of precincts in Marion County for which there is little assurance that rules, like checking ID, is strictly followed.
The adoption of voting centers is something I campaigned on when I ran for Clerk in 2002. Back then, people were utterly baffled by what I was proposing. They could not envision any other system than one where you could only vote in the precinct where you lived. Today, I think people would understand what I was talking about.
Here is what I wrote previously on the subject:
Voting Centers - A Time That Has Come for Marion County/Indianapolis (10/10/2008)
