I'm sure the new practice was designed to eliminate the exhoribant cost of mailing out the second installment bills. I suspect though the new practice is not going well as our law firm got a notice yesterday about taxes due tomorrow. On my own home, I never received a new property tax bill for tomorrow's payment. My guess is the Marion County Treasurer's office rushed out the commercial property tax bills when they realized that people weren't paying.
The message on the Treasurer's webpage explains:
Property taxes in Marion County, Indiana are due February 10, 2010 for the 2nd installment 2008/payable in 2009 taxes. Please use the remaining coupon on the tax bill mailed last fall or January to send with payment, or you can obtain your property tax amount online. You can expect a lot of Marion County residents will start screaming when they get hit with 5% and 10% penalties because they missed the February 10th deadline.
The tax cycle 2009 pay 2010 will return to the regular schedule with payments due May 10 and November 10, 2010.
